MANCHESTER-Josephine E. Wagner, 90, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at the Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn. She was born on November 13, 1931, in South Orange, N.J. the daughter of Wilfred E. Eaton and Josephine (Armstrong) Eaton. She graduated from Westover School and Middlebury College. She was a junior at Middlebury when she started helping a nice young man, Richard Wagner, do crossword puzzles before one of her classes. They married two years later, on September 24, 1955. They spent the next 67 years together, moving to Maine in 1956 and building a family. Jo was a kind, intelligent, curious, generous woman, who always said the best job in the world was being a mother. On any given day, you would be just as likely to find her reading the New York Times and working on solving the world’s problems, as reading the Constitution because she forgot which amendment said what. Jo was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Wilfred E. Eaton III. Surviving are her loving husband Richard, her son Scott and his wife Lisa of York, her daughter Mary Jo Wagner Dedon and her husband Tom of Cumberland, five grandchildren Matthew, Erica, and Elizabeth Wagner, Anna and Natalie Dedon, one great-grandchild Levi, and many neighbors and friends who were very dear to her. A private graveside ceremony and burial was held at the Baldwin Hill Conservation Cemetery, Fayette . A memorial service will be held later, details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the kind folks at Androscoggin Hospice House, c/o Androscoggin Home Healthcare and Hospice, 15 Strawberry Lane, Lewiston, ME 04240; Kennebec Land Trust, P O Box 261, Winthrop, ME 04364; or Maine Audubon, 20 Gilsland Farm Road Falmouth, Maine 04105.
